A Story of Compassion, Rescue, Adoption & the People Who Refuse to Give Up
There is another side of Hawaiʻi Island that many visitors never see.
Beyond the beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes and beautiful landscapes are thousands of animals whose lives depend on the kindness of people willing to stop, help and say:
“You matter. Your life matters. You deserve a chance.”
Across the Big Island, a remarkable network of rescuers, volunteers, fosters, veterinarians, donors and animal lovers is quietly changing lives.
Some work with dogs.
Some rescue cats.
Some care for goats, sheep, pigs, cows, chickens and ducks.
Some respond when disaster strikes.
And some simply open their homes and hearts when an animal has nowhere else to go.
Together, they form something much bigger than individual rescue organizations.
They form an animal-rescue ʻohana.
A Sanctuary Where Farm Animals Get a Second Chance
In Laupāhoehoe, Magical Creatures Sanctuary provides a safe haven for farmed animals.
The sanctuary was founded in 2018 and today cares for more than 95 animals who have been rescued from neglect, saved from slaughter, or arrived because they were injured, orphaned or otherwise needed help.
Goats.
Sheep.
Pigs.
Cows.
Chickens.
Ducks.
Cats.
Every animal has a story.
And every animal has a personality.
The mission isn't simply to keep an animal alive.
It allows the animal kingdom to experience safety, affection, dignity and the simple freedom of being able to live without fear.
Magical Creatures describes its vision beautifully: a world where every animal is valued, every life is respected and compassion guides how we live.
That vision is something the entire island can embrace.
In Volcano, a Safe Haven Is Being Built for Cats
Based in Volcano, another group of people working toward the same dream.
Volcano Cat Sanctuary rescues abandoned, injured and homeless cats while also trying to protect Hawaiʻi's fragile native ecosystem.
The organization is actively building a permanent sanctuary.
The work is enormous.
Land has to be prepared.
Fencing has to be installed.
Buildings have to be constructed.
Water, electricity and other infrastructure have to be developed.
And, most importantly, the cats have to be cared for while the dream becomes reality.
The sanctuary is already making progress, with cats available for adoption and fostering and a growing community of supporters helping build what they envision as a safe and beautiful home for rescued cats.
Imagine what happens when a frightened, abandoned cat finally realizes:
“Nobody is going to hurt me anymore.”
That moment is what every donation helps create.
Dogs Deserve Their Second Chance Too
Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue has spent years working to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray and abandoned dogs on Hawaiʻi Island.
Their philosophy is simple:
Save lives. One dog at a time.
But rescue isn't simply putting an animal into a kennel.
It means veterinary care.
Food.
Transportation.
Foster families.
Spay and neuter services.
Training.
Socialization.
Adoption events.
And finding the right family—not merely the first available family.
Aloha ʻĪlio is also working toward expanding its facilities so that more dogs can receive care and have better opportunities to meet potential adopters.
Their work demonstrates an important truth:
Adoption doesn't end the rescue story. Adoption completes it!
Finally, There Is HAKA
The Hawaiʻi Animal Kuleana Alliance has become another important part of the island's animal-rescue network.
HAKA was born from the crisis surrounding the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, when volunteers came together to help animals threatened by the disaster.
By the end of that response, more than 1,000 animals had been rescued or assisted.
Today HAKA continues its work through animal search and rescue, disaster preparedness, fostering, education, emergency response and cooperation with other animal organizations.
That cooperation matters.
Because no single rescue organization can save every animal alone.
Sometimes one group has the land.
Another has foster homes.
Another has veterinary connections.
Another has transportation.
Another has volunteers.
Another has the resources to respond during an emergency.
And sometimes a person simply sees an animal in trouble and makes the phone call that starts everything.
That is how an animal-rescue community works.
But... There Are Still Animals Waiting
Behind every successful adoption are animals still waiting.
Waiting for a foster home.
Waiting for medical treatment.
Waiting for transportation.
Waiting for a fence to be built.
Waiting for a kennel.
Waiting for someone to sponsor their food.
Waiting for someone to walk through the adoption door and say:
“That's my dog.”
“That's my cat.”
“That's my animal.”
And somewhere on this island, there is almost certainly another animal nobody has found yet.

You don't have to own property.
You don't have to be an experienced rescuer.

Because when you adopt an animal, something extraordinary happens.
You don't just give one animal a home.

Strength allows an animal to heal.
Healing makes adoption possible.
And adoption creates another empty space for a new rescue.
That is the circle of compassion.

The animals may be different.

But the goal is the same:
Rescue them.
